delivery systems. In the USA, ATSC (advanced television systems committee) transmissions serve the nation’s terrestrial receivers. Underpinning these diverse systems, the key technology that exploits scarce bandwidth is the Motion Picture Expert Group’s MPEG-2 compression system (Reference 1). Thanks to MPEG-2 compression, broadcasters can pack as many as 18 digital satellite channels into the bandwidth that one analogue channel requires (Reference 2). With broadcasters such as BSkyB due to discontinue analogue transmissions in 2002, it’s now difficult to see how analogue systems will survive this decade. As well as the promised diversity in programming, DTV promises consumers vastly improved picture and sound quality. Digital techniques consign such analogue transmission problems such as “noisy” pictures, colour imbalance, and

An Efficient Hierarchical Modulation based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Transmission Scheme for Digital Video Broadcasting

Due to the increase of users the efficient usage of spectrum plays an important role in digital terrestrial television networks. In digital video broadcasting, local and global content are transmitted by single frequency network and multifrequency network respectively. Multifrequency network support transmission of global content and it consumes large spectrum. Similarly local content are well ...

Overview of the Technologies available for Digitalisation of Terrestrial Radio Broadcasting in Europe1

The FM band (87.5-108 MHz) is home to a large number of radio programmes, and is still the main means of radio broadcasting in Europe. However, the FM band is fully allocated and therefore cannot offer a basis for increased diversity in the radio broadcasting landscape, nor can it offer an increase in the coverage areas of the broadcasters already licensed. Local radio as well as community and ...

Report Itu-r Bs.1203-1* Digital Sound Broadcasting to Vehicular, Portable and Fixed Receivers Using Terrestrial Transmitters in the Uhf/vhf Bands

Digital techniques have been used in sound programme production and transmission by some broadcasters for many years now, and more recently have become cheap enough to be introduced into the domestic consumer market, leading to wider public appreciation of high-quality sound, albeit via non-broadcast digital media. At the same time, there is rapidly growing congestion in the VHF/FM radio bands ...

Applications of Novel Video Compression Technology in Television

Digital technology is now widespread throughout television production, and opportunities for the application of novel video compression technologies are increasing throughout television production, distribution and delivery. The requirements for these applications are diverse, and such technologies will need to be flexible and easily integrated. The paper discusses five technology areas that th...

Digital Switchover: An alternative solution towards broadband access for all citizens

The paper anticipates that the actions to be taken concerning the Digital Switchover (transition form analogue to digital broadcasting – DSO) in UHF are of strategic importance for the European Member Countries and most candidate ones, as long as DSO arises as a possible and complementary solution towards the deployment of Broadband Access Infrastructures, especially in less favoured regions. T...
